Take Courage: Jesus Is Near

A Reflection on Matthew 14:27
“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”

Fear has a way of making everything feel larger.
A problem that might normally seem manageable suddenly feels impossible. An unanswered question begins to consume our thoughts. We imagine every outcome that could go wrong and quietly convince ourselves that we must figure everything out before we can finally feel at peace.
In Matthew 14, the disciples find themselves in the middle of a storm.
The wind is strong. The boat is being tossed by the waves. It is dark, and they cannot clearly understand what they are seeing.
Then Jesus comes toward them.
Their first reaction is not relief. It is fear.
But Jesus immediately speaks:
“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
He does not begin by explaining the storm.
He reminds them who is present in it.
Fear Changes What We See
When the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the water, they did not recognize Him at first.
Fear distorted what they saw.
Instead of recognizing the One who had come to help them, they assumed they were facing another danger.
Fear often does the same thing in our own lives.
It can make uncertainty feel like abandonment. It can make waiting feel like punishment. It can make a difficult season feel like evidence that God has forgotten us.
But not everything we fear is what it appears to be.
Sometimes the situation that terrifies us is also the place where Christ is drawing near.
We may not recognize Him immediately. We may not understand what He is doing. But our confusion does not mean He is absent.
Jesus Speaks Before the Storm Stops
One of the most comforting details in this passage is that Jesus speaks to the disciples while the wind is still blowing.
The storm has not yet ended.
The waves have not yet become calm.
Their circumstances have not changed, but His voice reaches them in the middle of it.
We often tell ourselves that we will feel peaceful once the problem is solved.
Once the test result comes back.
Once the financial pressure lifts.
Once the relationship improves.
Once the decision is made.
Once life becomes predictable again.
But the peace of Christ is not limited to calm circumstances.
He meets us before everything is resolved.
His presence does not always remove the storm immediately, but it gives us courage to remain steady while we move through it.
“It Is I”
Jesus does not offer the disciples a complicated explanation.
He says, “It is I.”
That is enough.
The One approaching them is not a stranger. He is the same Jesus who has already taught them, fed them, healed the sick, and shown them the compassion of God.
His character has not changed simply because the weather has.
The same is true for us.
When life becomes uncertain, God does not stop being faithful.
When we feel afraid, He does not become less loving.
When we cannot understand the path ahead, He does not lose sight of where He is leading us.
Our circumstances may change quickly, but the character of God remains steady.
Sometimes courage begins by remembering who He has already shown Himself to be.
Courage Does Not Mean You Feel No Fear
Biblical courage is not pretending that everything is fine.
It is not ignoring reality, suppressing emotion, or refusing to admit that something hurts.
Courage means fear does not get the final say.
It means we acknowledge what frightens us and still choose to trust the One who is with us.
We can feel anxious and still pray.
We can feel uncertain and still obey.
We can feel tired and still place the next step into God’s hands.
Faith is not always a bold, dramatic feeling.
Sometimes faith is quietly saying, “Jesus, I am afraid, but I believe You are here.”
When You Cannot See Clearly
Storms make it difficult to see.
So do seasons of grief, disappointment, exhaustion, change, and waiting.
We may struggle to see what God is doing or where the road is leading. We may wonder whether we misunderstood Him or whether we are somehow falling behind.
But clarity is not required for trust.
The disciples did not need to understand every detail of the night.
They needed to recognize the voice of Jesus.
When you cannot see clearly, return to what you know.
God is good.
God is present.
God hears you.
God is not frightened by what frightens you.
God is able to guide you through what you cannot navigate alone.
The Next Faithful Step
After Jesus speaks, Peter asks Him to call him out onto the water.
Peter’s courage is imperfect. He steps out in faith, becomes distracted by the wind, and begins to sink.
But when he cries out, Jesus immediately reaches for him.
This part of the story matters because it reminds us that imperfect faith is still faith.
We do not have to approach God with flawless confidence.
We can come trembling.
We can take one step and then become afraid.
We can call for help when we feel ourselves sinking.
Jesus does not wait for Peter to become calm, polished, or spiritually impressive. He reaches for him.
He will meet us in our weakness too.
A Simple Invitation
Perhaps there is something in your life right now that feels bigger than you.
A decision you cannot confidently make.
A burden you are tired of carrying.
A change you did not choose.
A future you cannot predict.
You may not be able to calm the storm yourself.
But you can listen for the voice of Jesus within it.
Take courage.
He is near.
You do not have to understand everything today. You do not need enough strength for the entire journey. You only need enough faith for the next step.
And when your faith feels weak, you can still call His name.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being present with us in every storm.
When fear changes what we see, help us recognize Your voice. When uncertainty makes us feel alone, remind us that You are already near.
Give us courage for the situations we cannot control and peace while we wait for answers. Help us remember that Your character does not change when our circumstances do.
When our faith feels weak, reach for us. When we become distracted by the wind and the waves, turn our eyes back toward Jesus.
Teach us to trust You one step at a time, knowing that we never walk through difficulty alone.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
You do not have to be fearless to move forward.
You only need to remember who is with you.
