Moving to Florida From a Cold Climate? Your Wardrobe Will Change

  • 2 min reading time

If you are moving to Florida from a colder climate, you probably do not need to bring your entire winter wardrobe with you.

Heavy sweaters, thick coats, insulated boots, and multiple layers that were everyday necessities up north may spend most of the year untouched in Florida.

Instead, your wardrobe will likely shift toward lighter fabrics, breathable clothing, dresses, comfortable tops, and pieces you can layer when temperatures drop.

You may also find that clothing you once considered strictly summer clothing becomes part of your year-round wardrobe.

Midi dresses, lightweight blouses, short sleeve tops, sandals, and breathable pants and skirts can remain useful well into fall and winter.

What Should You Keep?

Do not get rid of every cold weather piece before you move.

Florida does have cold snaps, particularly in Central and Northern Florida, and temperatures can occasionally feel surprisingly chilly.

It is worth keeping:

  1. One warmer coat
  2. A few sweaters
  3. Lightweight cardigans
  4. Jeans
  5. A versatile jacket
  6. Closed toe shoes
  7. A pair of boots if you enjoy wearing them

You simply may not need the quantity you owned in a colder climate.

What Will You Probably Wear More Often?

Your wardrobe will likely become much more focused on clothing that handles heat and humidity well.

Expect to reach for:

  1. Cotton dresses and tops
  2. Linen and linen blends
  3. Rayon dresses and blouses
  4. TENCEL™ clothing
  5. Lightweight pants
  6. Midi and maxi dresses
  7. Sandals and comfortable flats
  8. Lightweight layering pieces

You may also begin paying much more attention to fabric composition when you shop.

A sweater that looks beautiful online may not make much sense for your new climate, while a breathable cotton or rayon dress could become something you wear throughout most of the year.

Think Differently About Seasons

One of the biggest wardrobe adjustments after moving to Florida is learning that seasons do not necessarily determine what you wear.

The temperature does.

December can bring a chilly morning followed by a warm afternoon. February can give you sweater weather one day and sandal weather the next.

Instead of packing away entire sections of your closet each season, build a wardrobe of versatile pieces that can be layered as needed.

Florida style becomes much easier once you stop trying to dress according to the calendar and start dressing for the climate you actually live in.
