How to Measure Yourself for Clothing at Home
- 2 min reading time
Shopping online is easier when you know your measurements. While clothing sizes can vary from one brand to another, having accurate body measurements helps you choose the best fit with greater confidence.
All you need is a soft measuring tape and a few minutes.
What You'll Need
-
A flexible measuring tape
-
Lightweight clothing or fitted undergarments
-
A mirror (optional but helpful)
Stand naturally without holding your breath or pulling the tape too tightly. The measuring tape should be snug against your body but not tight.
Bust
Measure around the fullest part of your bust while keeping the tape level across your back. Relax your arms at your sides and avoid wearing a heavily padded bra for the most accurate measurement.
Waist
Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waist. This is usually just above your belly button and below your rib cage. Don't suck in your stomach and stand comfortably for the most accurate measurement.
Hips
Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep the tape level all the way around.
Shoulders
Measure from the outer edge of one shoulder straight across your upper back to the outer edge of the opposite shoulder. If possible, ask someone to help for the most accurate measurement.
Inseam
Measure from the top of your inner thigh to the bottom of your ankle. A favorite pair of pants that fit well can also be measured for comparison.
Why Measurements Matter
Women's clothing sizes aren't standardized, so a size medium in one brand may fit differently than a medium in another. That's why checking your measurements is often more reliable than relying on the size printed on the label.
If you're unsure how to compare your measurements to a size chart, read our guide on How to Use a Women's Size Chart.
At Justyna Grace, we recommend referring to our Standard Size Chart along with the size chart provided on each product page whenever available. Comparing your measurements to the sizing information can help you choose the best fit with confidence.
A Few Helpful Tips
-
Measure yourself every few months, especially if your body has changed.
-
Save your measurements in your phone for easy reference while shopping.
-
If you're between sizes, consider the fabric. Structured fabrics with little stretch may fit differently than soft knits or fabrics with added stretch.
-
Read the product description for fit notes, fabric content, and sizing recommendations.
Knowing your measurements takes the guesswork out of online shopping and helps you build a wardrobe you'll love wearing. A few simple measurements can make all the difference in finding pieces that fit comfortably and flatter your unique shape.
